I had to replace and fix a door handle and lock. But there was a catch.

The idea was to disable the handle opening latch function, when the door isn't key locked. i.e. the door latch must only open when using a key, and handle will be used only as a support for pushing or pulling the door from either side.

The simplest and easiest idea that came to mind was to round off the door handle axel, using a lathe, so that it would not activate the door latch, but still provide a strong support for both handles.

The only drawback is that handles will loose the spring feedback action associated with the door latch, hence they will probably orient vertically instead of horizontally, as people are used to. However, if absolutely needed, a spiral spring can be adapted to the handle axel, to provide this spring back feedback.
